This year is slowly slipping away and has it been a year to remember. For this month’s Life by Lens post, we chose the theme “thankfulness”. If you have been following my blog, you know I am participating in a month blog circle with some of the most talented photographers where we document our everyday lives. My life is so blessed with so many things I am thankful for and this post will not even touch the tip of the iceberg but it’s a start.

For my little boy growing up (too fast)…

Welcome to another edition of our monthly blog circle, Life by Lens! Hard to believe that it’s been a month since the last Life by Lens post and a month since my oldest has been in school. He is loving every minute of it and doing so well! We decided to go back to the theme idea and we chose to improve on using more of the environment in our photos. I had every intention of taking the boys out and capture some photos at a fabulous location but every single afternoon, the storm clouds rolled in and it was just a torrential downpour that put a big damper on my plans. So I had to come up with a Plan B; shooting inside and using our home as the “environment”. Well that didn’t really work either but I still got these photos that I love of my little peanut in some moody light. Somebody pinch me because how in the world did I end up with the cutest little bug in the world? (Ok, that had nothing to do with using the environment but we all have to agree he is pretty darn cute!) So next time we come up with a theme, I’ll have to redeem myself and come up with something to blow you away!

And did you know that a two year old’s mood can change in a blink of an eye?

Summer has flown by and it’s another month for my Life by Lens blog post. I hope everyone has been enjoying these posts because I really love putting it all together. It helps that I have so many wonderful photographers in the circle that motivate and inspire me. So don’t forget to click on the link at the end to see what we are all up to this month!

My little boy is growing up before my eyes. I still remember those sleepless nights when he was a newborn, the excitement of him rolling over for the first time, taking his first steps, his first words (I can’t believe we were ever worried about his speech!), lots and lots of firsts that we were excited about. I never thought I would be THAT mom though, you know the one that will be bawling when she drops off her first born off at Kindergarten? It’s such a huge deal though. Isn’t it? Next thing you know, he’s going to middle school, then high school, getting his license, graduating, going off to college, getting married, having kids of his own, and and and… What? I’m losing it? But it’s Kindergarten people! Where he will be learning reading, writing, and arithmetic, bringing home homework, making new friends, tying his own shoes, buying his own lunch and bringing it to the table all by himself!

Brandon is such a wonderful kid and I know he make our family proud each and every step of the way. Those tears when I take him to his classroom will only be tears of joy because I can’t believe what an intelligent, independent, funny, considerate, and sweet boy he has become over the last five years.

So of course I had to take him out to make sure I document this important milestone in his life. Just look at my handsome boy, ready to venture into the big world!

(Thank you Grandma for the adorable blazer! I knew it would come in handy one day!)

I can’t believe it’s been a month since my last blog circle post. This year has definitely flown by! If you have been following my blog for the last few months, you know that I’m a part of a monthly blog circle project with a group of crazy talented photographers where we try to document things in a different way than we normally would. At the end of my blog post, you can view the next photographer’s post and so on and so on until you’ve come full circle!

Remember I said that my boys never cooperate for any posed photos? Ever? It’s true, they never have…until…a miracle happened few weeks ago. I actually got a couple of photos of their sweet smiling faces! Who are these kids? It didn’t last very long and I had to be quick but I am so happy with these photos. All kidding aside, my boys are growing up way too fast. Brandon is starting Kindergarten in less than a month and my little baby is no longer a baby. And quoting my favorite book that makes me cry every time I read it to the boys:

“I’ll love you forever,
I’ll like you for always,
As long as I’m living,
My baby you’ll be.”

The ONLY reason I picked up my camera and started this photography journey in the first place, to capture their innocence and the essence of their youth, something that I know will change before I know it. I hope they thank me one day!! I know I wish I had more photos of me when I was young, I can probably count the number of photos I have of me under the age of 5 on the fingers of one hand.

I don’t know about you but I think he’s pretty darn handsome!

And no photoshoot is ever complete without my oldest being a complete goofball! There is not a day that goes by that he doesn’t put a smile on my face though.

We probably head out to the beach 2-3 times a month, especially during the spring and summer and my boys just have a blast playing in the sand. And this time around, we all had fun building a sand castle so that my 5 year old could … what else?…Destroy it… Of course right?

Life by Lens is a monthly blog circle project I am participating in with a wonderfully talented group of photographers where our goal each month is to document normal everyday things we otherwise wouldn’t.   At the end of my blog post, you can view the next photographer’s post and so on and so on until you’ve come full circle! This month’s theme will be color; I did a little interesting take on it!

Our home has been taken over. By none other than Angry Birds. Angry Birds Space, Angry Birds Star Wars, Angry Birds Seasons, Angry Birds Rio, and even the spin off Bad Piggies. Who knew it would be such a hit for my 5 year old? When we moved a few months ago, I was purging a lot of toys and the old containers of Play Doh did not make the cut. So a few days ago, my Angry Birds fanatic was looking for Play Doh because out of the blue, he wanted to make Angry Birds out of them. It was a few days before we made it to the store to buy some and he immediately spent the afternoon carefully constructing each different bird, down to all the little details. So I introduce you to my little Play Doh artist! I promise he did all on his own and I didn’t help him one bit!

The many COLORS of Angry Birds! We have Red Bird, Yellow Bird, Black/Bomb Bird, White Bird, Boomerang Bird, Ice Bird, Luke Skywalker Bird, Chewbacca Bird, and even a few piggies!

Life by Lens | April 2013

Life by Lens is a monthly blog circle project I am participating in with a wonderfully talented group of photographers where our goal each month is to document normal everyday things we otherwise wouldn’t.  So I’m taking this opportunity to capture a the little things and push my creativity to the next level. At the end of my blog post, you can view the next photographer’s post and so on and so on until you’ve come full circle!

So I pretty much got started into photography because I wanted to take better photos of my children. It started when my first son was born but really took off after my second son came along. A lot of my photos in the beginning were setting up different “photoshoots” with them posed, well dressed, different props, sometimes with my studio set up or dragging them out to a location I thought would look nice. Well, after a while, they got sick, annoyed, uncooperative, you name it, it wasn’t very easy to get them to smile and look at the camera, there were more tears, running away, and taking photos of the backs of their heads or nothing at all. So it was either give up taking photos of them or try a different approach. Of course giving up photographing them was not going to be the option, I opted to take on the “lifestyle” route and capture them doing things they already did, like playing, taking a bath, sleeping, eating, outings, etc. However, the photographer and perfectionist in me makes sure I “set up” the shot with the right lighting, sometimes rearranging things around the house to declutter the photo, grabbing the right lens for shot because a single change in focal length, aperture, shutter speed can make a different photo. So I was still able to take photos of them and nothing was forced and everyone was happier! And while I love posed, smile at the camera, well-dressed photos, these are the type of photos I cherish in my family photo album.

While our adventures on a weekday afternoon after we come home from work/school are not very exciting, it’s still something I want to remember. Even though it’s crazy hectic, trying to cook dinner, getting them snacks to hold them off until dinner is ready, keeping them out of trouble all at the same time, it’s moments like this that are too easily forgotten.

We always make time to play outside while the weather is bearable and on this bright sun kissed afternoon, the little one brought out the stuffed Woody doll and I just loved how he was carrying it around. And don’t let this little innocent face fool you though, he’s a big trouble maker in the making.

Tampa_Child_Lifestyle_Photographer_07

This is the main reason why I’ve almost given up taking photos of the kids. I get these goofy, obnoxious expressions from this one all the time! I think I was telling him to look at me and smile and instead of doing just that, he gave me this pose.

Tampa_Child_Lifestyle_Photographer_08

But I’ll take some cute scrunched up nose giggles any day! What I give to have such innocence again!

Tampa_Child_Lifestyle_Photographer_05

Potty training this time around has been a little challenging to say the least. At 2.5, my older son was pretty close to being potty trained and I was surprised how easy it was! Well, the little one has zero interest in going in his little cute froggy potty and is happily content doing his business anywhere he feels like. I was just happy he sat on it the other day…

Tampa_Child_Lifestyle_Photographer_04

…unsuccessful but we still practiced good hand hygiene and washed our hands.

Onto to their favorite activity of the day. And this day was even more special because they got to take a bath in my tub, which by the way I’ve been in a whole zero times. Their bathroom has unfortunately one tiny window and not photography friendly.  This bath also is the first bubble bath they’ve had ever since the older one has severe skin sensitivities and most soaps irritate his skin. I’ve searched all over and finally found a super sensitive fragrance free bubble bath made by California Baby.  It was a happy day!
